There is a legislative requirement under BS EN 12965 which focuses on safe working practices regarding the use of PTO equipment. This 'standard' stipulates that "The locking system of the PTO yoke shall have no point which can cause entanglement (e.g. by collar design, see example 1)."

Example 1: A retractable collar type yoke
Example 2: A Pin type yoke
This requires all shafts that are used as a PRIMARY shaft, i.e. connected to the tractor, must have a collar or similar quick release mechanism AT THE TRACTOR END. The other end of the shaft is free to have a pin type operation (see example 2), if desired.
For example, our VTE1100 PTO shaft which has a retractable collar at one end and a pin type connection on the other would conform to this, as long as it is fitted the right way around!
All shafts that are used as a SECONDARY shaft, i.e. NOT connected directly to the tractor, can have a pin type operation AT BOTH ENDS, if desired.
