John Deere CombineWith minds turned towards the hectic harvesting period ahead, it is important to make sure you and your equipment are prepared for what it is about to undertake. We have put together a list of simple things to remember ahead of the busiest period of the year.

Before you leave

  • Make sure the tyres on your low speed vehicles are filled with a rapid-seal puncture sealant.
  • Check and replace any fire extinguishers that are out of date or partially discharged.
  • It may seem trivial but is your CD/Radio working? Long hours in the cab can be made much more enjoyable if they are done to your favourite music! Bluetooth functionality will make sure you can use your phone safely and legally.

For you

Ford TractorFor the tractor

  • Ensure your toolbox has a good set of appropriate spanners and is not missing that all important socket. If your toolbox doesn't lock, consider upgrading.
  • Spare fuel filters are handy to have if your planning long road hauls (make sure you also have the tools to change them!)
  • grease gun with spare cartridges and de-watering fluid will help keep everything moving and prevent untimely seizes.
  • If the ground is soft it's good practice to reduce tyre pressures, but when you get back on the road this can increase fuel consumption and tyre wear. Keep a compressor on hand, or if you have air brakes you can use your tractors air compressor system to make adjustments.

For the combine

  • Just as with your tractor, but you may also need spare: tines, knives, fingers, lifters and drive belts.

For the baler

  • Keep a chain breaker and spare links, plus sheer bolts, and roll pins.

Don't forget to prepare your vehicles well in advance. Once you make that mad dash for the harvest you don't want to be making untimely stops for those forgotten bits!
