How are fire extinguishers classified?
Its all very well knowing you need a fire extinguisher, but which one is right for you? All extinguishers are classified into one or more category, depending on the contents.
Class A: for organic solids and other ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, cardboard and most plastics.
Class B: for flammable or combustible liquids such as fuel, grease and oil.
Class C: for flammable gasses.
Electrical fires should only be tackled with a multipurpose (A,B and C rated) extinguisher.
Class D: for combustible metals usually found in places such as laboratories.
Class F: for cooking oil and fat fires.
Remember: consider your own safety first - if you are faced with a fire and are in any doubt call 999 and ask for the fire service.
